Demographic and Background Information

Demographic and cultural changes that encourage the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life are occurring in our society. Currently approximately 3.6 million Canadians have some form of disability with roughly 13.5 % residing in Ontario. As the baby boomers age the numbers of people with disabilities will increase along with them.

People with disabilities face several barriers when attempting to participate in society including attitudinal barriers, physical barriers, architectural barriers, systemic barriers, and technology barriers. Legislation has attempted to remove these barriers. As mandated in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2005, Accessibility Standards for Customer Service have been developed. These standards will apply to all persons and organizations providing goods or services in Ontario to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in our society.
